The debate topic for the first part of the season this year is oil and gas drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf. The Bear Debaters competed at their first tournament on October 4, 2008 held at Eastview High School. The White Bear team did not recieve any trophies at this tournament, but still have two more tournaments on this first topic, as well as three debates on the second topic in November, before they head to state. The second topic is a closely guarded secret, which is only revealed in the second half of the season.

The State Tournament begins on December 5, and continues through December 6.
