Barack Obama steps into the White House to face the problems of an extremely volatile and changing world. Countries such as China, Russia and India are emerging onto the superpower scene, while Islamic extremism and terrorism have cast a dark shadow upon the world. Violence in Gaza threatens the brittle peace in the Middle East; U.S. troops are still in Iraq and Afghanistan and domestically the nation is hurting. Obama has his work cut out for him; though it would take a miracle worker to fix all the problems we are currently experiencing. Obama carries the hope of the American people and many others across the world in his hands. Obama has started out his administration with a swift and distinguishable break from the polices of President Bush. The announcement of the closing of Guantanamo Bay and the legalization of some forms of Stem Cell research have shown his willingness to put forth new policies that set the foundation for a changing America. Obama needs to continue this; domestically and in foreign policy. This break with the old ways will show the world that America is willing and ready to work for change. Obama is going to have to work with other world leaders to mend differences and restore America’s image. If Obama can gain world support he will be able to more effectively address the problem of terrorism. Obama needs to be diplomatic and cautious with other nations but still very aggressive with terrorism. Americans, Democrat or Republican, want terrorists responsible for bombings and attacks to be brought to justice. Obama has to keep America strong in its War on Terror; any show of weakness will be an opening for terrorists to strike. Though tricky, this balance can be achieved by using diplomacy, strengthening existing alliances, talking with world leaders and keeping the U.S. military involved in the pursuit and apprehension of terrorists internationally. Domestically Obama has a mess of problems to deal with. His recovery and reinvestment plan will address many of the major problems. The plan is set to include tax cuts for those making less than 200,000 dollars a year, Business tax cuts, Infrastructure projects and repair, Green Investments, and Aid to Sates according to Time Magazine.Obama needs to make sure this plan works; because when you are dealing with close to a trillion dollars you do not get a second chance. The Green Investments and infrastructure projects are projected to add close to a million jobs and improve the overall state of the nation (Time Magazine). The Green Investments will decrease our dependency on foreign energy and ready the country for the future. The Tax cuts and Aid to States are meant to get more money in the hands of people and government institutions such as education, health and transportation. The plan is by far the biggest economic program the world has ever seen (Time Magazine). Now that it has passed in the Senate, all Obama and America can do is hope and pray that it works. Obama has started with a note of change, as his campaign enthusiastically promised. Continuing this change is what Obama needs to focus on. When the people elected Barack Obama, they elected change, and it is up to Obama to bring about that change. The people want change in all places and all parts of this country. Obama cannot fix everything; but what he can do is make changes that will impact this nation and this world for the better.
